Return to Tradition
For the fourth successive year, Luvcorfu Properties participated in the CorExpo Home Exhibition, which took place at the CorExpo Centre near Vrioni from 17 to 21 November 2005. Thousands of visitors enjoyed the sight of Luvcorfu’s stand - the first as they entered the exhibition hall - which was constructed with traditional building materials and decorated with old furniture and museum pieces brought down from the Arillas Heritage Walk.

Luvcorfu director Harry Tsoukalas explained the stand’s motif. ‘The theme was Back to the Future,’ he said. ‘By using the old materials and techniques we had on display, we demonstrated that, even in a new-build home, you can create the atmosphere of an old property. And this is basically our new concept - building houses which look like they’ve stood for a hundred years or more. Not the garish, eyesore villas or little plastic-coated hutches that everyone else is building. We see our new concept as the future for new developments in Corfu.’

To initiate the new concept, Luvcorfu has teamed up with the building company Petra Traditional Constructions , whose first two projects are underway near Arillas. The concept has already succeeded in capturing the attention of the residential tourism market, with several sales, mostly to foreigners, already realized.

The houses are being constructed in imitation of existing old village houses and, while they offer all modern comforts, they preserve the traditional appearance of their surroundings.

They will have pitched ceilings with full insulation, roofed with recycled Byzantine tiles. The exterior will have exposed drystone-effect walling. Plastered sections will be painted with limewash tinted with natural ochre colour, applied to look as if it has been worn by the elements for centuries. The windows will be fabricated of wood in village style, divided vertically into three panes, with two double-leaved wooden shutters. The verandas will be roofed with old tiles and will be supported with boughs of old cypress or olive wood. Outdoor areas will be paved with natural stone throughout, in a style similar to the cobbled alleyways of many villages.

Development sites are located at Arillas, Aspiotades and Ano Korakiana and shortly in other areas all over the island. Prices start from 100,000 euros for a 68 sq.m. house with ready kitchen and bathroom. The price includes the VAT which will be levied on new builds from 1/1/06.
Buyers interested in preserving the traditional character of Corfu, even in a new-build home, should contact one of the representatives of Luvcorfu Properties.
