More for your Money in Agios Mattheos
The central south village of Agios Mattheos is proving a treasure house of properties for sale, according to Luvcorfu. This village is one of the largest of the island, and boasts among the best facilities outside Corfu Town.

‘Luvcorfu has at least 15 properties on the books in this lovely village,’ said local resident Di Giannouli. ‘It’s not because people are leaving the village, but because most of them have a second, more modern or larger home nearby.’

And what a selection is available! ‘There are properties from 15,000 euros, and prices across the board are substantially lower than most other regions of Corfu,’ continued Di. ‘They include a small house in need of renovation for only 18,000 euros, with a garden as well, a complete ruin on a nice edge-of-village plot for 25,000 euros, two really stunning olive presses, several houses - large and small - which only need a little work to move in, and a few ready homes which are priced at levels you’d expect to buy a property for full renovation elsewhere. And due to the location of the village, most of them have absolutely great views. I’d definitely recommend anyone thinking of buying in Corfu to go looking for property in this village. It’s got something for everyone, and superb facilities. And you get more for your money!’

Agios Mattheos is located 22 kilometres from Corfu Town in the central south of the island, on the eastern slopes of the mountain that bears the same name.

The settlement is extensive and well-populated (about 2000 residents), and the people work mostly in agriculture and in the tourist resorts of Messongi and Moraitika.

Most of the houses are spread on the hillside above the road, and are reached by a maze of small streets and winding alleyways, with picturesque sights at every turn. The village centers on the long main street where pavement cafes border the roadside. In the evening this area buzzes, and children play in a safe environment. Here are also a number of grocery and hardware stores, and there are more small shops, coffee bars and eateries in the maze of alleys. On the outskirts is a swimming pool and bar complex which village residents can use at any time. There are six buses a day to Corfu Town, with a journey time of about 45 minutes.

A lovely footpath leads through primal woodland to the summit of the mountain, where there is an ancient monastery and a superb view of the west coast. Several excellent beaches are nearby, none of them busy even in high summer.

Paramonas is five minutes drive from the northern end of the village, and in a southerly direction the road leads to the great deserted beaches of Halikounas and Korission, and the smaller ones at Prassoudi and Skidi. The nearby lagoon at Korission is a haven for dozens of species of wild birds.
